Barack Obama, the senator from Illinois, is not someone you'd have bet on as a candidate ten years ago. He's black, he's young, and he's got a funny name, and those are not positives in American politics. But he's also one of the most eloquent public speakers of his generation (a few gaffes notwithstanding) and a great public-policy man with a firm grasp of the issues and emotions that govern the American political landscape. First black president? Quite possible.
